Lemmon is a town of approximately 1,400 located in Perkins County in northwestern South Dakota. It is home to the world's largest Petrified Wood Park, which fills an entire block of the downtown area and is built entirely of petrified wood, fossils and stone. The park features a wishing well, a waterfall and a castle. The castle weighs in at 300 tons and boasts towering spires and turrets. There are also two museums inside the part that are both built entirely of petrified wood. If you look closely, you can find dinosaur claws, bird tracks and fossilized snakes in the petrified wood. The town of Lemmon also offers a 9-hole golf course, an airport, two convenience stores, a variety store, a hardware store, a grocery store, and several restaurants. Lemmon is near the Grand River Museum, which is located along Highway 12 and features exhibits on creation science, fossils, Native Americans, cowboys and ranch life, a full-scale tipi and a model of the Ark. For outdoor recreational activities, Shade Hill is about 12 miles south of Lemmon. It offers swimming, boating, hiking, picnicking, camping and fishing for walleye, catfish, and bass. Shade Hill Reservoir is one of western South Dakota's largest lakes with more than 5,000 surface acres of fun for everyone.
