Martin is located in Bennett County in southwestern South Dakota. It serves as the county seat and has a population of approximately 1,200 residents. The town of Martin lies in a beautiful area that is rich in Lakota culture and tradition. It is near Badlands National Park, which contains the world's richest Oligocene epoch fossil beds, dating 37-28 million years old. The Badlands is 244,000 acres of sharply eroded buttes, pinnacles, and spires, where bison, bighorn sheep, endangered black-footed ferrets, and swift fox roam one of the largest, protected mixed-grass prairies in the United States. There are several hiking trails in the park and picnicking and camping are also available. Easy day trips from Martin include Mount Rushmore, Wind Cave National Park and Custer State Park. Wind Cave is one of the world's longest and most complex caves along with 28,295 acres of mixed-grass prairie, ponderosa pine forest and wildlife. Custer State Park is a 71,000-acre park that offers swimming, fishing, hiking, camping, horseback riding and scenic drives.

Martin Weather & Climate

Southwestern South Dakota , near Badlands National Park, has an unpredictable climate. Winters are generally very cold with 12 to 24 inches of snowfall per year. Summers are hot and dry with occasional violent thunderstorms. Extremely high winds are common year-round. Dramatic weather changes are common in any season, so visitors should be prepared for sudden changes. Temperatures in this region can range from 116 F in summer to -40 F in winter. June is the wettest month of the year and December and January are the driest. Use caution while visiting this area. Sudden storms may include icy conditions, hail, thunderstorms and occasionally tornadoes.
