Southeastern South Dakota has four distinct seasons ranging from very cold winters to hot summers. The climate is classified as interior continental. During the summer, temperatures are often in the 90s , although it usually cools down into the 60's at night. It's not unusual for southeastern South Dakota to have severe hot, dry spells in the summer with the temperature climbing above 100 °F for days or even weeks at a time. Winters are very cold with high temperatures averaging below freezing much of the time. The precipitation is semi-humid in the southeast part of the state with around 25 inches of annual precipitation. Thunderstorms are common in the summer and blizzards are possible in the winter.
