Yankton
is a historic city located in southeast South Dakota that was the original capital of Dakota Territory. The town is named for the Yankton tribe of Nakota Sioux Native Americans. It's situated on the Missouri River just downstream from the Gavins Point Dam and Lewis and Clark Lake. Yankton is often called the "River City", due to its close proximity to the Missouri River, and the importance that the river played in the citys settling and subsequent development. Yanktons Riverboat Days is an annual celebration held in the third full weekend in August that attracts over 135,000 people. The nearby Lewis & Clark Lake offers a multitude of recreational opportunities such as fishing, boating, swimming, canoeing and kayaking, picnicking and hiking. The marina at the lake has over 400 boat slips, fueling, rentals, mechanics and a convenience store. Yankton is also home to a family fun park with miniature golf, go-karts, bumper boats and more. Other Yankton attractions include the Bede Art Gallery, the Dakota Territorial Museum, Garritys' Prairie Gardens, the Lewis & Clark Visitor Center and the Riverboat Days & Summer Arts Festival each August.

Southeast South Dakota has an interior continental climate with four distinct seasons. Summers are hot with occasional violent thunderstorms and winters are extremely cold.
The normal January temperature is 12 degrees F and the average high temperature is close to 90 degrees F , although it often cools down to close to 60 at night. The precipitation of southeast South Dakota is semi-humid, with around 25 inches of annual rainfall. The eastern part of the state is considered part of tornado alley with South Dakota experiencing an average of 23 tornadoes per year. Winters are somewhat more stable, although severe weather in the form of blizzards and ice storms can occur during this season.
