Watertown
is a city of about 20,000, located in northeastern South Dakota's Codington County. It is home to the Redlin Art Center, which houses the original art works of Terry Redlin, one of the most popular wildlife artists in America today. The gallery is open to visitors year round, except for major holidays. Watertown is also home to Bramble Park Zoo, which is home to over 500 mammals, birds, reptiles, fish and amphibians that represent 130 varieties from all over the world. The zoo includes a Discovery Center, Children's Petting Zoo, outside exhibits and a gift shop. Other attractions in Watertown include the Codington County Heritage Museum, Goss Opera House and Gallery and Mellette House. The elegant Mellette House was home to South Dakota's first governor, Arthur Calvin Mellette. This 1885 home is a wonderful example of Italianante architecture and offers free guided tours. Watertown's uptown district contains over 60 buildings that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Several special events are held in the town each year, including an Artwalk in June, Crazy Days in July and a Quilt Tour in October. A Lighted Parade is held the Friday after Thanksgiving, along with horse drawn wagon rides and a Christmas Tree Festival in the rotunda of the courthouse in December.

Northeast South Dakota has a four-season, interior continental climate. Winters are very cold and summers are very warm to hot. The average January temperature is 12 degrees F and the normal temperature in July is 74 degrees F. However, it's not unusual for the daytime temperature during summer to climb to 90 degrees or higher, but often cooling down to the 60s at night. The normal annual precipitation is more than 20 inches, with much more rain occurring in this part of the state as compared to the southwest portion of the state. The eastern part of the state is considered part of tornado alley, with an average of 23 tornadoes per year. Blizzards and ice storms are also possible in the wintertime.
