Fort-Pierre
is located in Stanley County in central South Dakota. It is considered part of the Pierre Micropolitan Statistical Area. At the 2000 census, the population of Fort Pierre was 1,991 residents. It is named for Pierre Chouteau Jr., a fur trader who established the fort there. Lily Park, which is situated at the mouth of the Bad River in Fort Pierre, is near the site where the Lewis and Clark Expedition met with the Teton Sioux. The Lewis and Clark Family Center in nearby Pierre offers interactive displays where you can see a dug-out canoe like the ones used by Lewis and Clark and much more. Fort Pierre and Pierre are two of South Dakota's oldest settlements, and as such, offer unparalleled historic attractions. In addition, the Missouri River and rolling hills and prairies of the Great Plains provide year-round outdoor recreation. The Oahe and Sharpe Lakes offer more than 2,200 miles of shoreline along with boating, fishing, windsurfing, sailing, jet skiing and other water sports, while the Missouri River provides canoeing and kayaking. Other attractions near Fort Pierre include the South Dakota Cultural Heritage Center, the National Guard Museum and the South Dakota Discovery Center and Aquarium.

Central South Dakota has an interior continental climate with cold winters and hot summers. Precipitation is light in the winter and moderate in the summer. Seventy percent of the time, the skies over central South Dakota are clear and visibility is more than forty-five miles. The average high temperature in summer is close to 90, although it often cools down to close to 60 at night. It's not unusual for South Dakota to have severe hot, dry spells in the summer with the temperature climbing above 100 F for days at a time. Winters are cold with high temperatures in January averaging below freezing and low temperatures averaging below 10 degrees. Other severe weather in central South Dakota can include tornadoes, thunderstorms, high winds and blizzards.
