Pierre is the capital city of South Dakota, located in the geographic center of the state. As of the 2000 census, the population was 13,876, making it the second least populous state capital in the nation, after Montpelier, Vermont. The city was founded in 1880 along the Missouri River and has been South Dakota's capital since it gained statehood in 1889. It was chosen largely due to its location in the center of the state. Pierre is also a major statewide transportation hub. One of the most interesting attractions in the city is the state Capitol. Completed in 1910, the Capitol contains stained glass windows, elaborate tile work, dramatic murals and art and sculpture displays. The Capitol is open every day of the year from 8am to 10pm. Other attractions in Pierre include the Lewis and Clark Family Center, South Dakota Cultural Heritage Center and the South Dakota National Guard Museum. The South Dakota Discovery Center and Aquarium is also located in Pierre and features more than 60 hands-on exhibits that illustrate the principals of electricity, magnetism, life sciences, physics and telecommunications. For history buffs, Fort Pierre Chouteau is the site of the largest trading post on the upper Missouri River from the mid-1800s. Today, not much remains of the fort's wooden bastions and buildings but the site, a National Historic Landmark, interests archaeologists, who hold excavations there each summer. Also of interest in the Pierre region is the Oahe Dam Visitor Center on Lake Oahe and the Oahe Chapel, built in 1877 and used as both church and schoolhouse for the Oahe Mission and the Sioux Indians.
