Deadwood
is a historic Wild West city of approximately 1,800 that is located in Lawrence County in west-central South Dakota. Named for the dead trees found in its gulch, the entire town was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1961. In 1989, limited-wage gambling was legalized in Deadwood to rejuvenate tourism. Deadwood started off illegally, as its location was part of Native American territory. However, the discovery of gold that triggered the Black Hills Gold Rush gave rise to the "lawless town of Deadwood," which quickly reached a population of around 5,000. In the late 1800s, Deadwood was well known for its wild and almost lawless reputation, where murder and prostitution were common. The town attracted many famous outlaws of the day, and gained notoriety for the murder of Wild Bill Hickok. Today, the town is a great family vacation destination. It offers over 80 gaming halls, historic museums, Mount Moriah Cemetery, which is the final resting place for Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane and historic saloons and hotels. There is even an old gold mine in Deadwood where you can try your luck panning for gold. Deadwood is also near the Mount Rushmore National Monument.
