Sturgis
is located in Meade County in western South Dakota. It has a population of approximately 6,500 residents. The town of Sturgis is most well known for being the site of one of the largest annual motorcycle events in the world. Held the first full week of August, the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally draws people from around the world. The first rally was held on August 14, 1938 by the Jackpine Gypsies motorcycle club. The first event, called the Black Hills Classic, consisted of a single race with nine participants and a small audience. It has grown to an event that drew an estimated 525,250 visitors in 2005. Sturgis is also near several unique historical and recreational attractions. Bear Butte State Park is a geological feature near Sturgis that is an important landmark and religious site for the Plains Indians tribes long before Europeans settled in South Dakota. The mountain is sacred to many indigenous peoples and is associated with various religious ceremonies throughout the year and is a place of prayer, meditation, and peace. Bear Butte also offers horseback riding, camping, fishing and boating. Other attractions near Sturgis include the Fort Meade Calvary Museum, the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall of Fame, the Black Hills National Cemetery and the Fort Meade Recreation Area and National Back Country Byway.
