Nemo
is a small community located in Lawrence County in west-central South Dakota. Nestled in the heart of the Black Hills region, Nemo is near many national treasures, including Mount Rushmore, historic forts, state parks, national forests and sprawling prairie lands. Nemo is situated in the Northern Black Hills, but the Southern Hills region is easily accessible via Highway 385. Mount Rushmore, the historic city of Custer and Sylvan Lake are all approximately one hour from Nemo. Pactola Lake is 30 minutes away. The Northern Hills offers fantastic fishing, hiking and biking, golf, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling. Nemo is also just minutes to the historic town of Deadwood, which was known for its wild and lawless reputation in the late 1800s. The entire town of Deadwood is designated a National Historic Landmark. Today, it offers over 80 gaming halls, historic museums, saloons and hotels, and Mount Moriah Cemetery, which is the final resting place for Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane. There is even an old gold mine in Deadwood where you can try your luck panning for gold. Nemo is home to several unique bed and breakfast inns and guest ranches. For more attractions, restaurants and shopping, Nemo is only 18 miles to Rapid City, South Dakota.

Southwestern South Dakota has weather affected by a continental climatic pattern, which results in hot summers and cold winters. The Black Hills region has a more moderate climate than the surrounding prairie. Clouds, approaching from the west, must reach higher altitudes to pass over the Hills. The cool temperatures of the higher altitudes cause the clouds to lose their moisture as they pass over the Hills. Due to this rain shadow effect, annual precipitation in the Hills is much more than the prairie to the east. Temperatures in the Hills are usually about 5 degrees warmer in the winter than in the plains, and 6 degrees cooler in the summertime. The southern Hills have a slightly warmer climate and is drier than the northern Hills.
