Custer
is a town of approximately 2,000, located in southwestern South Dakota. It is considered to be the oldest town and "mother city" of the Black Hills. Custer was the site of one of the major encampments of the Black Hills Expedition of General George Armstrong Custer's 7th Cavalry in 1874. It was also the site of the first gold discovery in the Black Hills. The settlement was almost abandoned in 1876 when word of the much larger gold strikes in Deadwood and Gulch spread, but it prevailed and became an established city of southwest South Dakota. The town of Custer celebrates a "Gold Discovery Days" festival annually in July. Custer is also home to the Crazy Horse Memorial, which is the world's largest mountain carving in progress. The memorial also includes Native American museums, an educational/cultural center and a sculptors log studio-home. There is a laser-light show at the memorial nightly throughout the summer. Custer State Park is just minutes from town and is home to one of America's largest bison herds. This 71,000-acre park also offers swimming, fishing, hiking, camping, horseback riding and scenic drives. Other attractions in Custer include the Jewel Cave National Monument, National Museum of Woodcarving, and Flintstones Bedrock City Theme Park & Campground.

Southwestern South Dakota has weather affected by a continental climatic pattern, which results in hot summers and cold winters. The Black Hills region has a more moderate climate than the surrounding prairie. Clouds, approaching from the west, must reach higher altitudes to pass over the Hills. The cool temperatures of the higher altitudes cause the clouds to lose their moisture as they pass over the Hills. Due to this rain shadow effect, annual precipitation in the Hills is much more than the prairie to the east. Temperatures in the Hills are usually about 5 degrees warmer in the winter than in the plains, and 6 degrees cooler in the summertime. The southern Hills have a slightly warmer climate and is drier than the northern Hills.
