Rapid-City
is located in Pennington County in west-central South Dakota. It is the second-largest city in the state with a population of approximately 60,000 residents. Rapid City is named for Rapid Creek, on which the city is situated, set against the eastern slope of the Black Hills. The city has the distinction of being divided by a small mountain range that splits the western and eastern parts of the city into two. Rapid City offers an abundance of things to see and do. A 13 ½ mile bikeway runs along Rapid Creek. Some of the paths have steep grades and long climbs, but the scenery is outstanding. Mountain biking is also a fast growing sport in the Black Hills, thanks to 6,000 miles of fire trails, logging roads and abandoned railroad grades. Rapid City is also home to several beautiful golf courses and rockhounding is another unique activity in the area. The Black Hills are among the top five locations in the U.S. for a variety of minerals. The states official gem, the Fairburn agate, can be found in alluvial deposits along the foothills. The rock beds are scattered near Kadoka, Interior, Scenic and Fairburn. These eroding badlands areas, where collecting is allowed, are administered by the Buffalo Gap National Grasslands. Other things to do in Rapid City include fishing, wildlife photography, horseback riding, camping and mountain climbing.

Southwestern South Dakota has weather affected by a continental climatic pattern, which results in hot summers and cold winters. The Black Hills region has a more moderate climate than the surrounding prairie. Clouds, approaching from the west, must reach higher altitudes to pass over the Hills. The cool temperatures of the higher altitudes cause the clouds to lose their moisture as they pass over the Hills. Due to this rain shadow effect, annual precipitation in the Hills is much more than the prairie to the east. Temperatures in the Hills are usually about 5 degrees warmer in the winter than in the plains, and 6 degrees cooler in the summertime. The southern Hills have a slightly warmer climate and is drier than the northern Hills.
