Rochford is a tiny old west mining town located in Pennington County about 16 miles northwest of Hill City in western South Dakota. You reach it by traveling on a gravel road that leads through Mystic on its way to towns of Lead and Deadwood. The road, while unpaved most of the way, is smooth and well graded. Visting Rochford is taking a step back in time, as it is little more than a "ghost" of what it was in earlier times. Site of the Standby Mine, Rochford has several of the old buildings still standing, including the Irish Gulch Saloon and the old Rochford schoolhouse. It's an interesting place to visit for history buffs and as a day trip from neighboring Hill City. Attractions to visit in the area include Custer State Park and Mount Rushmore. The town of Hill City also dates to the mining rush of the 1800s. Tin mining was dominant in the 1880s and led to an influx of people into the area. Hill City is also home to the 1880 Train, which takes visitors on a two hour, scenic, unforgettable train ride through the Black Hills. In recent years, Hill City has become a center for the arts featuring several art galleries and festivals.

Rochford Weather & Climate

Southwestern South Dakota has weather affected by a continental climatic pattern, which results in hot summers and cold winters. The Black Hills region has a more moderate climate than the surrounding prairie. Clouds, approaching from the west, must reach higher altitudes to pass over the Hills. The cool temperatures of the higher altitudes cause the clouds to lose their moisture as they pass over the Hills. Due to this rain shadow effect, annual precipitation in the Hills is much more than the prairie to the east. Temperatures in the Hills are usually about 5 degrees warmer in the winter than in the plains, and 6 degrees cooler in the summertime. The southern Hills have a slightly warmer climate and is drier than the northern Hills.
